Since July 15, widespread protests began in various Arab majority towns and cities in Khuzestan and quickly spread to other regions in the province. Security forces have killed and injured dozens of protesters. There are several reasons for the unrest, including a water shortage, poverty, and discrimination. The protests have spread to Ahvaz, Susangard, Izeh, Dezful, Behbahan, Mahshahr, Abadan, and many other cities in Khuzestan province.

In recent months, several assailants belonging to the Salafi fundamentalist groups in the Kurdistan province, Iran, have conducted several attacks against other citizens living in the province.
